Communications

Wanted to take a little time and talk about communications with your medical staff.  Over the years we have been communicated with by many ways.  Some of them good and well a few just has to be improved.

We have purchased 11 Kenwood radios for our staff to use.  I also have purchased the program to program our radios.  We like using our radios since they have channels to contact the Kentucky Horse Park staff.  In case of emergencies or needing to communicate with them for any reason we can by using our radios.  We also try and work with the Special Event Staff at KHP when there are smaller shows/events.  The barn call radio at times will be able to contact your Safety TEC medical staff.  If this is the case, your radio should/will be labeled to show you which channel.

We have over 50 channels in our radios and have them set up user friendly for us.  If you plan on bringing in radios from an rental place, ask them for the frequency they have in your radios.  This way you can free up a couple of your radios I hope you were going to use for us and we can use our own and not have to carry around more than one radio.

We also have a contact with a company in Lexington that rents radios.  One of our clients has used them before with satisfaction and they are not farm from Masterson Station or the Kentucky Horse Park.  Let me know if you would like information for them.

I would also like to suggest that you put your medical staff on a channel by themself.  With a lot of radio traffic that goes on during a horse show, we tend at times to tune the radio out and/or turn it down.  Then when you call for your medical staff it could take several calls to get us.  We listen for a couple key words "medic or EMT" to get our attention.  We have been known to answer to other things as well.

We know a few shows have the small family type radios you can pick up just about any place.  We would rather not use these radios since we feel things can go wrong with them at any time.  Not to say that something can't go wrong with our radios, but we keep our radios, spare radios and spare batteries close by if something goes wrong.

Also when handing out the radios make sure the folks know how to use them.  I know after so many years doing shows you would think people would know how to use them.  We have noticed some of them do not and this could cause problems as well.  Some of them may not know how to change the channel.

If we can be of any assistance with anything let me  Jerry know.
